Our Purpose

Mission: We connect Chicago's vibrant ethnic communities with broader audiences by amplifying diverse voices through journalism, cultural programming, and community engagement. We're committed to empowering ethnic journalists, cultural advocates, and civic leaders through education, resources, and meaningful opportunities.

World In Chicago operates as an initiative of the Community Media Workshop, with our Ethnic Media Project generously funded by the McCormick Foundation.

What We Do

Ethnic Media Journalism Project

Led by veteran award-winning journalist , our journalism initiative provides crucial insights and practical support for ethnic media professionals. Through thoughtful commentary and hands-on programs, Steve delivers story concepts, professional guidance, and essential resources.

Our project features professional development workshops, public conversations, and networking opportunities designed specifically for Chicago's ethnic journalists. This program is made possible through our partnership with the Community Media Workshop and support from the McCormick Foundation.

Global Music Radio Program

Broadcasting on WHPK 88.5 FM, our radio show is directed by Demetrio P. Maguigad alongside co-hosts and producers Leo Suarez and Brenda Lee Intengan. This globally-inspired music program features both traditional and contemporary world music, with special emphasis on Chicago's local world music artists, community organizers, and cultural leaders.

We also showcase archived episodes from Music Around the World with Marta Nicholas, which airs Thursday afternoons at 5:00 p.m. on WHPK 88.5 FM.
